Until recently, Reliance Jio was the only mobile network carrier in India that supported VoLTE. While many operators did launch their own 4G services in circles where they have been issued licenses, none of them supported VoLTE calls – until now.
Last month, Airtel launched its first VoLTE services in Mumbai and earlier this week, the company announced the introduction of VoLTE services to its user base across the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Airtel plans to quickly upgrade its existing network infrastructure across the country to support VoLTE before the end of the year, a company representative told PTI.
Airtel issued a press release announcing the launch of VoLTE services in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Announcing the launch, Dharmender Khajuria, Chief Executive Officer, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Bharti Airtel was quoted saying.
“We are delighted to announce the addition of VoLTE capabilities on our 4G network in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as it enables high definition voice qualities and faster call setup time”.
He further added;
“Airtel VoLTE will be available on popular 4G/LTE enabled mobile devices, which must have an Airtel 4G SIM. Customers can call any mobile, landline network using Airtel VoLTE. There will be no additional data charges for VoLTE and calls will be billed as per existing plan or packs benefits.”
Elsewhere in India, Airtel – and other carriers except Jio – offer voice services over existing 2G and 3G networks using traditional circuit-switch technology. This upgrade to VoLTE services will help Airtel counter the marketing offensive from Jio in which Jio touts its “superior” VoLTE network as one of the factors that separate them from traditional cellular carriers.
Apart from Airtel, other major players in the segment including Vodafone and Idea are also planning to start their VoLTE service across India. You can expect these providers to upgrade their networks in the months to come.
