Xiaomi Mi 8 launch confirmed for May 31

Xiaomi, the Chinese tech company that is soon going to turn eight, is said to be holding its birthday celebration with much fanfare on May 31 in its home country. Previous reports have suggested that the firm is planning to launch an anniversary edition smartphone, expected to be called the Mi 8 at the event. The company has confirmed the reports of this launch by posting teaser image on Chinese microblogging website Weibo. Also, Xiaomi Global spokesperson Donovan Sung, “To celebrate our 8th year anniversary, we’ll be launching Mi 8 at our annual flagship product launch in Shenzhen on May 31.”

Adding to this is a latest leaked image as spotted on Weibo, that reveals the upcoming Mi 8 will come in two storage variants – 6GB RAM and 64 GB storage for CNY2,799 (approximately Rs 29,918) and a high-end variant featuring 8GB RAM with 128GB internal storage that will be priced at CNY 3,199 (approximately Rs 34,193).

Besides the price, the image also reveals some specs of the Mi 8 smartphone such as the handset will sport a 6.01-inch display and will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor. The front camera comes with 3D face recognition and artificial intelligence features for capturing selfies.

Other reports have also suggested that the Mi 8 will be Xiaomi’s first handset to feature the in-display fingerprint sensor as well have the iPhone X-like notch. It is also likely to sport a 3D module for facial recognition.

As for the event, a report by Gizmochina reveals that Xiaomi is going to launch a variety of products at the event and Xiaomi is selling the tickets of the event from between 799 Yuan and 1,999 Yuan. The report further claims that the event will be accommodating a large capacity of 5,000 people.

Meanwhile, in India, Xiaomi is going to launch a new smartphone in India on June 7. The company has tweeted about the launch of a selfie-centric smartphone at an event to be held in New Delhi. As per the speculation, the company is going to launch the successor of the Xiaomi Redmi Y1 and
Redmi Y1 Lite smartphones in India, both of which were Xiaomi’s selfie centric devices.
